Meditation for Damaris

A damper on the piano supresses the natural vibration of a string. This vibration occurs when the hammer hits the string (through the pressing of a key). When the pedal on the piano is pressed, on every string the damper is released. This allows all strings of the harmonic range to vibrate along with the hit string. This composition focuses on the sound field created by strings which are allowed to resonate freely.
Only pitch is given: the performer only plays a note when it contributes to the emerging sound field.

The composition was originally written for dancer and choreographer Damaris Verduijn.
